SUMMARY In this article, the problem of testing for the collapsibility of a contingency table is studied. The notion of collapsibility is first discussed and three aspects of this property are distinguished. Tests for these three forms are presented, with attention focussed on 2 × 2 × K tables. Finally, it is shown that in a collapsible table, the marginal odds-ratio is more efficient than the usual estimators of the common odds-ratio.
