The syntheses of fered readers familiarize them at a glance with the events and personalities involved in the various volumes under scrutiny, enabling them to pick out the particular volumes they would like to read. Yet here, too, the sensi tive artist, the poet, the moving and poignant force behind the objective and cogent descantations, is nowhere to be found.
