Key result
Heavy exercise in elite athletes linked to ~5% lower total cholesterol and increased HDL-C.
Why the study?
Physical activity is cardioprotective and affects the plasma lipid panel, prompting evaluation of plasma lipid levels in elite volleyball players following heavy training.
Does a 10-week heavy exercise program improve plasma lipid levels in healthy male elite volleyball athletes?

Does a 10-week heavy exercise program improve plasma lipid levels in healthy male elite volleyball athletes?
Absolute Event Rate: 151.22% vs 159.63%
p-value: p=0.001
A 10-week heavy exercise program in elite male volleyball athletes significantly improved their lipid profile by decreasing total cholesterol and increasing HDL-C.
May support lipid benefits from heavy training in elite athletes; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.

Bülbül et al. (2022) conducted an observational in Healthy elite male volleyball athletes (n=18). Heavy exercise program vs. Pre-exercise baseline was evaluated on Total cholesterol (TC) level (mg/dl) (p=0.001). A 10-week heavy exercise program in elite male volleyball athletes significantly decreased total cholesterol from 159.63 to 151.22 mg/dl and increased HDL-C from 44.62 to 49.74 mg/dl.
