Pain is a common and serious problem for individuals living in nursing homes. With federal reporting of prevalence of pain among nursing home residents, nursing homes have incentives to develop more effective pain management programs. Pain coping skills training is a well-recognized technique to reduce pain and improve function. This study reports findings from a pilot study of six nursing home residents and five paraprofessional staff, who participated in an eight-session program to evaluate the feasibility of a nursing-home-based pain coping skills training intervention. Despite the presence of severe disability, residents were eager to participate in training and reported improvements in pain relief.
