Social psychological thinking and the data of an exploratory study are used to illuminate potentialproblems in family vacation travel. Aspects of vacations that are discussed include the opportunities to be apart, territoriality changes from the home situation, amount of previous experience vacationing with one's current vacation companions, division of labor changes. expectations and ideals, traveling with children, and traveling with parents. Vacation travel is seen as providing both the opportunity for revitalization and creative change and the opportunity for serious interpersonal difficulties.
