Narrative has been called ‘a primary act of mind'; the arrangement of ideas underlying it is in fact chronological. Similarly ‘argument’ may be so called, the arrangement underlying it being logical. It seems likely that these two basic acts are best furthered in writing as distinct from speech. Although it is often suggested that young children are not suited to the latter there are indications to the contrary.
