A systematic review develops a diagnostic framework for sustainability indicators in residential buildings, highlighting local relevance.
In recent years, sustainability has become a central concern in the residential building sector, generating increasing interest in understanding and structuring building sustainability. Numerous studies have proposed sustainability indicators aligned with environmental, social, and economic objectives. However, existing frameworks often overlook local specificities, particularly in developing countries such as Algeria. This paper presents a critical and systematic review of international sustainability assessment tools and academic literature to develop a diagnostic framework of indicators adapted to the Algerian residential context. The proposed framework adopts a hierarchical structure linking objectives, criteria, and indicators. It is structured around 10 sustainability objectives aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is illustrated through thematic dashboards. Beyond its contextual relevance, this framework provides a transferable conceptual and methodological foundation to support the adaptation of sustainability assessment approaches to diverse local contexts.
