Descriptive study assesses green practice awareness in surgical nurses, highlighting educational needs.
Objective To assess surgical nurses' awareness of the benefits of green practices in operating theatres. Methodology A descriptive exploratory study was conducted among 120 surgical nurses working in operating theatres across five hospitals in Cairo, Egypt. A purposive sampling technique was used. Data were collected using a structured online questionnaire, including demographic data, background information, and the Nurses' Awareness of Green Practices Benefits (NAGPB) tool. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results The findings revealed a substantial gap between awareness and implementation. Approximately 97% of nurses were unfamiliar with the concept of green practices, and 94% had no prior experience in a green environment. However, 75% agreed that green practices improve environmental safety, and 70% reported positive effects on patient outcomes. The overall mean awareness score was 2.12, indicating a moderate level of awareness. Conclusions Although nurses demonstrated moderate awareness of green practices, their practical implementation remains limited. These findings highlight the need for structured education and institutional support to promote sustainable practices in operating theatres.
