RADIN, NORMA. Three Degrees of Maternal Involvement in a Preschool Program: Impact on Mothers and Children. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1972, 43, 1355-1364. 71 children in a compensatory preschool program were divided into 3 matched groups. 1 group was offered no maternal involvement; another, moderate involvement; and the third, intense involvement. At the end of the year no significant differences were found among the children in the 3 groups. Significant changes on parent measures were found only in groups with parent involvement. 1 year later, a follow-up study of 24 children revealed that the youngsters in the 2 groups with maternal involvement showed a significantly greater gain in Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test IQ during the kindergarten year than the children with no maternal involvement.
