The energies and B(E2;0g.s.⁺→2₁⁺) values for the lowest J^π0ex0ex=0ex0ex2⁺ states in the neutron-rich radioactive nuclei 38,40,42S and 44,46Ar were measured via intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation. The results for 40,42S provide the first evidence of moderate deformation near N0ex0ex=0ex0ex28, while the effects of the N0ex0ex=0ex0ex28 shell closure persist in the Z0ex0ex=0ex0ex18 nucleus ⁴⁶Ar.
