Theoretical analysis demonstrates a cosmological redshift correction for galaxy peculiar velocities, indicating that standard cluster virial mass estimates must be reduced by a factor of (1 + z)^2.
Radial (line of sight) velocities of galaxies are frequently expressed in the form V = cz and interpreted to mean: V = -00 + V0 $ CZ , where VO is the radial component of our own peculiar velocity, V0 is the radial component of the peculiar velocity of the galaxy, and ZR is the cosmological redshift. "Then velocities are expressed in this fashion, it is important to note that the radial component of the peculiar velocity of the galaxy is not V0 but OG = (V0 + ZRvo)/ (1 + ZR). This correction is of first order in the cosmological redshift. The virial-theorem mass MVT' of a cluster of galaxies, calculated by using the catalogued dispersions (V02)1!2, must therefore be reduced to MVT = MvT'/(1 + ZR)2 when Vo is negligibly small.
