Johnson and wrote a dissertation on attempts to confederate the states of Central America, which subsequently appeared in an expanded form as Failure of Union: Central America,1842–1960. He is also the author of William Gilpin, Western Nationlist, Latin American Policy of the United States, and the forthcoming Tropical Enterprise: The Story of Standard Fruit and Steamship Company. He teaches at Arizona State University.
