Over a 4 week period, 37 families with a child with Down syndrome and 20 comparison families recorded the expenses involved in rearing their children. In addition, holiday expenses and other major expenses were recorded at the end of the year. It was found that all the families incurred considerable financial costs but that there were additional expenses for the families with the Down syndrome child. There was also less participation in activities such as dance, music, gymnastics and sports by these families.
