Micrometeorological methods of measuring and modelling forest evapotranspiration are reviewed and evaluated. Measurement methods include eddy correlation, aerodynamic, Bowen ratio/energy balance and stomatal diffusion resistance techniques. Modelling approaches discussed include a model relating evapotranspiration rate to the root zone water content and the net radiation flux, the Penman equation, and vapour diffusion models requiring stomatal resistance characteristics of the stand. Measured and modelled estimates of evapotranspiration from a Douglas‐fir stand are compared.
