Cardiac MRI guides AF management and individualizes stroke prevention by revealing underlying structural remodeling.
Why the study?
Atrial and ventricular substrate play a major role in AF development and maintenance, and cardiac MRI has emerged as a viable tool to localize and quantify structural remodelling for arrhythmia management and individualized risk prevention.
Does cardiac MRI help in the management and treatment of atrial fibrillation?
Does cardiac MRI help in the management and treatment of atrial fibrillation?
Cardiac MRI provides valuable information on atrial structural remodeling, aiding in the individualized management and risk stratification of patients with atrial fibrillation.
Should not yet alter AF management; leaves open prospective validation of MRI-guided remodeling assessment.
AF is the most common arrhythmia in clinical practice. In addition to the severe effect on quality of life, patients with AF are at higher risk of stroke and mortality. Recent studies have suggested that atrial and ventricular substrate play a major role in the development and maintenance of AF. Cardiac MRI has emerged as a viable tool for interrogating the underlying substrate in AF patients. Its advantage includes localisation and quantification of structural remodelling. Cardiac MRI of the atrial substrate is not only a tool for management and treatment of arrhythmia, but also to individualise the prevention of stroke and major cardiovascular events. This article provides an overview of atrial imaging using cardiac MRI and its clinical implications in the AF population.

Zhao et al. (2020) conducted a review in Atrial Fibrillation. Cardiac MRI was evaluated. Cardiac MRI serves as a viable tool for interrogating underlying structural remodeling in atrial fibrillation, aiding in arrhythmia management and individualizing stroke prevention.
