Influence Diagrams and Organizational Power

March 1980, volume 25 This paper examines the use of influence diagrams to help understand political processes within organizations. This technique is illustrated through a case study of a new extended care facility connected to a hospital. Advantages of influence diagrams are highlighted by comparing the level of understanding before and after the technique was used. The improvement in performance that may be derived from the use of influence diagrams is discussed. Finally, the implications of the case for important issues in organization theory, particularly those dealing with internal politics and conflict, are discussed.
