Narrative review highlights the impact of the Mediterranean diet on sleep quality, suggesting health benefits across diverse populations.
Several studies have examined the bidirectional relationship between sleep and diet, with sleep duration and quality influencing food and energy intake. In addition to affecting sleep duration and quality, dietary choices also influence sleep quality. In this review, we examined the literature to describe the relationship between sleep and diet, focusing on the role of the Mediterranean diet on sleep. Currently, research suggests that sleep hygiene is vital for improving nutritional intake and overall health. In addition, the Mediterranean diet has been associated with improved sleep quality among individuals of all ages and ethnicities. Despite the controversy among previous studies, further research is warranted to determine the effect of a Mediterranean diet on sleep duration and quality.
