Numerical estimate of neutron radiation dose in proton therapy, highlighting its high effectiveness implication.
Secondary neutrons are formed during the interaction of protons with elements of biological protection and the beam formation system, especially when using the passive proton scattering method. Considering the effective dose from such neutrons is a very important task due to their high relative biological effectiveness (RBE). In this paper, a numerical estimate of the effective dose of neutron radiation in the irradiated target and some sections of the treatment room of the Proton Therapy Complex of the INR RAS is made using the data on the neutron fluence. The obtained effective dose of neutron radiation varies from 0.1 to 18.4 mSv/Gy.
