Improved bounds for expected values of record statistics in symmetric and general distributions suggest broader applicability.
In this paper, using known values of the expectations of upper record values E(R₂),…,E(Rₘ) , for some m∈\2,…,n-1\ , we derive improved bounds for E(Rₙ) . Further improvements are obtained in the case of a symmetric underlying distribution. Numerical illustrations of the results are provided for the standard normal distribution. Finally, extensions of the results to k -record values are detailed.
