Demonstrates enhanced impact resistance in cork composites with eco-friendly materials, suggesting a viable solution for lightweight applications.
This study introduces innovative cork composites using temperature-induced gelation of shear thickening fluid (STF) matrices. This approach substitutes thermosetting resins, addressing environmental concerns while enhancing impact resistance. Rheological analysis confirms the non-Newtonian behaviour of STF and uncovers the critical gelation temperature, demonstrating its ability to act as a multifunctional matrix, serving as both a binder and an energy absorber. Impact testing reveals that these composites have the potential to achieve reduced impact forces and equivalent energy dissipation, offering smoother decelerations. These findings position STF matrix-based cork composites as a viable solution for applications requiring lightweight impact resistant materials, potentially eco-friendly and with tunable mechanical properties.
