Assesses depression and psychosocial factors in women with genitourinary fistula, highlighting mental health needs.
Genitourinary fistula is an abnormal communication between the urinary and genital tracts that results in continuous urinary leakage and profound physical, social, and psychological distress among affected women. Although the incidence of fistula following gynecological surgery, particularly hysterectomy, is increasing, obstructed labor remains the predominant cause in Pakistan, accounting for the majority of vesicovaginal fistula cases. Beyond the physical morbidity, women living with genitourinary fistula often experience stigma, social isolation, marital disruption, and loss of economic productivity, all of which contribute to poor mental health outcomes. This study aims to assess the prevalence and severity of depression among women affected by genitourinary fistula and to explore associated psychosocial factors. Findings from this study are expected to highlight the substantial mental health burden faced by these women and underscore the need for integrated psychosocial and mental health support within fistula care services.
