The hydrogen-induced Ni (110) 1 ×{} 2 surface reconstruction is preceded by a softening of the Rayleigh mode at the Ȳ point of the surface Brillouin zone. The displacement pattern for atoms moving in this mode conforms to the displacement of atoms in the pairing-row reconstruction. The softening of the mode and the reconstruction is attributed to a repulsive interaction between the zigzag chains of hydrogen atoms along the close-packed rows of the nickel surface atoms.
