The shape of things to come

Nigeria's Nobel prizewinner was interviewed by ’Biyi Bandele‐Thomas on 3 July, after President Babangida had annulled the elections on 12 June, in which Mashood Abiola won a cross country majority, but before his unexpected handover to the interim national government on 27 August. On 1 October, the government instituted a Commission of Inquiry to ‘determine the circumstances leading to the cancellation of the elections and look at the repercussions’. The government's hope that this will lead to ‘national reconciliation’ leaves many questions on the future of the country unresolved
