Many congregations in America are full of white hair. The “Age Wave” described by Ken Dychtwald (1990) is upon us. As a whole, seminary education seldom prepares clergy to meet the new demands and opportunities that come with a ministry to older adults. If clergy wish to effectively and efficiently self-educate to better serve older adults, what should they study? What are the questions that need to be asked? What are the resources where answers can be found? When it comes to providing an effective ministry with older adults, the author believes there are several foundational needs. This essay explores those needs.
