Parental overprotection and fear may influence physical activity more than disease severity after CHD repair.
Why the study?
Sedentary lifestyle and the contributing behavioral and traditional risk factors remain a problem in children with congenital heart disease after surgery.
Behavioral risk factors significantly contribute to a sedentary lifestyle in children after congenital heart disease repair, highlighting the need for comprehensive rehabilitation approaches.
The problem of sedentary lifestyle in children with congenital heart disease after surgery is described in this review. There are behavioral risk factors like overprotection by parents, restrictions inspired by doctors and teachers and children`s fear of physical activity in addition to traditional risk factors such as cardiac disease severity or physical training. Perhaps, behavioral risk factors have more influence on physical activity compared to cardiac disease severity or physical training. Modern data explain the necessity of complex approaches to rehabilitation of children with congenital heart disease. These approaches may be effective for physical activity stimulation in these patients, improvement of physical functioning, quality of life and life expectancy.
