Develops a rat model of pre-eclampsia, highlighting nitric oxide's role in blood pressure and protein levels.
Objective: To develop a rat model of pre-eclampsia. Method: N-nitro-L-arginine methylester(L-NAME) 50mg kg/d was given by gavage for 1 week starting from day 13-14 of pregnancy. Animals were weighed daily and systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured. Twenty four hour urinary protein was estimated till the day of gestation. After delivery pups were removed, numbered and weighed individually. Results: L-NAME significantly raised the systolic as well as diastolic blood pressures. Significant proteinurea was there in the treated group and litter weight was also reduced. Conclusion: Chronic nitric oxide deprivation produces pre-eclampsia in rats and can be used as a model.
