Morocco’s agriculture and rural development from sustainable development aspects. Morocco, the third-largest agri-food exporter in Africa, relies heavily on agriculture. The sector accounts for 13% of the total GDP and represents 35% of all employment with 72% of rural employment, which explains the relevance of this sector to rural development in Morocco. The rural population is also vulnerable to climate variability due to its dependence on agriculture. The review aimed to explore and examine sustainable agriculture and rural development by investigating the importance of agriculture to rural populations and its sustainability. In addition to studying the past trends of rural development strategies with an emphasis on the current situation. The review also discussed Morocco’s potential to promote sustainable rural development. The paper concluded that rural development in Morocco depends to some degree on agricultural development, and sustainable farming is expected to foster rural development. Accordingly, agricultural strategies have proved effective in the economic and social improvement of the rural population. However, the high illiteracy and low adoption of technologies make it challenging to adopt sustainable solutions in these areas. Nevertheless, the success of sustainable agriculture will likely lead to supporting sustainable rural development.
