The recent increase in public and professional concern over mistreatment and abuse of older adults has done little to broaden our approach to the problem. With few exceptions, existing intervention strategies cling to the premise that elder mistreatment is a unidimensional problem with a unidimensional set of "solutions." A more efficacious approach would be to implement a multi-level strategy based on Johnson's (1986) four-part definitional scheme. Such a strategy could respond to the needs of teh elderly victims and, at the same time, address the situational context of the abusive environment.
