The last few years have seen a substantial amount of experimental and theoretical work on thequantum mechanics of macroscopic variables in low-temperature systems, and in particular on the phenomenon of “macroscopic quantum tunnelling.” This talk summarizes the present situation in this area of research with emphasis on a number of currently unresolved conceptual problems, and reviews its current and potential significance for the foundations of physics.
