Online discussion in asynchronous learning networks is one of the most important tools to enhance interactions. However, conducting effective online discussions in an asynchronous learning network requires strategic planning and management. This article discusses effective designs, management tactics, and strategies to produce ideal asynchronous network discussions that allow contemplation and encourage the development of critical thinking. A model of an online collaborative learning community is then applied to implement the designs. These designs, management tactics, and strategies can be applied to asynchronous discussions for any instruction format, online courses, or as a supplement to face-to-face instruction.
