The specific heats of two samples of finely divided particles of sodium chloride (specific surfaces 41.8 and 78.3 m2/g) have been measured from 4° to 20°K. The excess specific heat is found to be proportional to the specific surface S and to T2 with a constant of proportionality equal to 0.64×10−6 cal·g deg−3· m−2·mole−1. This result lies within the range of various theoretical predictions of the effect.
