Prospective study finds an 18.9% prevalence of pseudoexfoliation syndrome in older adults, highlighting strong links to cataracts and glaucomatous intraocular pressure.
A prospective study of Pseudoexfoliation (PSX) syndrome prevalence has been evaluated in the northwest of Spain. In 850 examined patients (greater than or equal to 60 years old), PSX syndrome was found in 161 (18.9%); the frequency in those who suffered from cataract was 28.7%. Mean age in patients with PSX syndrome was 73.16 years old (70.19 in the whole of the patients examined). Bilateral PSX syndrome was observed in 73.3%. Intraocular pressure glaucomatous in 49% of patients. The frequency of PSX syndrome increases with age; no differences have been noticed between sexes.
