This study investigates the impacts of casino gaming on small tourism ventures in Macao since the liberalization of casino licences in 2002. In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with 40 entrepreneurs to gather their views on these impacts. The positive impacts reported include an increase in business opportunities and the improvement of quality standards of businesses resulting from the increased competition. Negative consequences include a serious shortage of human resources, inflation, high shop rental costs and intense competition. Although the entrepreneurs' level of support for casino gaming was generally high, for the sustainable development of these small tourism ventures, which play a crucial role in marketing a destination, it is necessary for the government to play a more active role in minimizing the negative impacts. The paper concludes with the policy implications of the findings for destination managers in Macao and in other locales intending to open casinos.
