This letter discusses the definition of a diffuse sound field, two measures (diffuse surface reflection and volume scatterers) proposed to increase sound field diffuseness, and the applicability of diffuse-field theory. It is shown that the two proposed measures increase diffuseness, and the applicability of diffuse-field theory, with respect to sound decay/reverberation time. However, they decrease diffuseness, and the applicability of diffuse-field theory, with respect to steady-state sound-pressure level. The implications of these results for the definition of a diffuse sound field are discussed.
