THE APPEARANCE OF THIS MAJOR volume is timely and very welcome. On the centenary of the Zionist Movement, it is appropriate to take stock and to re-examine the issues retrospectively. The Papers contain over thirty articles by historians of note on a variety of subjects spanning the whole century and more. Most of them were originally published in Hebrew. Professor Anita Shapira, a co-editor, provides a useful and an enlightening introduction. She is Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Tel-Aviv University, and a distinguished historian. She writes sensibly and convincingly, posing searching questions.
