Case studies of black students who obtained counseling at a college mental health clinic from 1969—1972 are analyzed to illustrate four modes of adaptation—withdrawal, separation, assimilation, and affirmation—of minority students to a majority university community. Knowledge of the patterns of response of minority students is of value to counselors in anticipating problems as they develop. The need for adequate counseling, remedial, and tutoring services to enhance the adaptation of those identified as high risk students is indicated.
