Investigates electrocatalysts for hydrogen production, suggesting cost-effective advancements.
For a sustainable hydrogen production, hydrogen evolution reaction plays a significant role. This process requires catalysts that combine extraordinary properties of catalysts such as durability, high activity and cost effectiveness. Recently, transition metal borides have emerged as potential promising HER catalysts due to their inherent properties of remarkable corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and low overpotential. This particular research focused on investigating transition metal borides materials using arc melting which helps understand the relationship between structural features and catalytic activity. It was learned that compositional tuning influenced HER kinetics that led to further optimization. This particular study focused on ternary borides with varying proportions of Mo, Cr, and W within the complex of Y(TM)B4. Beyond catalysis, the outcomes of this work contribute to broader advances in synthetic methodologies for stabilizing metastable and unstable phases, while also enhancing the fundamental understanding of bonding mechanisms within boride compounds. The catalysts developed in this study are expected to help solve the current situation of high cost and scarce PGM based catalysts by studying their efficiency, cost effectiveness and sustainability. This research is anticipated to make meaningful contributions to the foundational areas of catalyst synthesis and the mechanistic understanding of metal catalysts.
