The research introduces a multidisciplinary understanding of the social perception of two artistic perspectives: public art and the Theatre of the Oppressed. I analyzed Theatre of the Oppressed works aimed at social transformation across six major urban centers. This dissertation investigates whether the Theatre of the Oppressed can be classified as a medium of public art, as each experience holds validity and representation. Each arts-based experience provides a different conceptual and urban context for understanding the Theatre of the Oppressed. The objective was to discuss concepts of public art and the methodology of the Theatre of the Oppressed, highlighting its relevance as a theme that provokes reflection on urban issues and social inequalities. The Brazilian Augusto Boal developed the Theatre of the Oppressed as a method of popular education for emancipation; however, it has benefited from the contributions of many minds. It continues to grow across all continents, constantly incorporating new techniques and adapting to address new local needs. This dissertation analyzes the application of the Theatre of the Oppressed in six major urban centers—Paris, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Berlin, and New York—and demonstrates how it enables oppressed individuals and non-actors to participate in theatrical performances, creating a collaborative process for urban change.
