This volume was conceived several years ago, with the purpose of presenting a history of American psychiatry as a memorial for the centennial celebration of the American Psychiatric Association. The volume is intended to be a historical review of the evolutionary synthesis of a century of American psychiatry, and it stresses psychiatry as a growing cultural force. A chapter, entitled "Presenting this Volume," by Dr. Gregory Zilboorg, and a general historical survey, by Dr. G. K. Hall, serve as an introduction. The book is composed of fourteen chapters, three of which deal with military psychiatry. Much time has been spent in research in the production of this book, and it is an excellent volume for historical reference. Included in the book are photographs of the original founders of the American Psychiatric Association and facsimiles of the signatures of the various presidents and the thirteen founding members.
