This paper examines the usage of chatbots in education context using a systematic review. Most of the latest reviews cover literature up to the year 2023 and before. There are hundreds of papers that have been published in the year 2024 and 2025. It is necessary to provide an updated systematic review of the topic. Two well-known databases, Web of Science and Scopus have been used in the study. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) protocol was used in the study. 485 peer-reviewed journal articles have been included for the analysis. Current research themes in using Chatbot in education are Chatbot design, applications of Chatbots; student acceptance/adoption of Chatbots; Chatbot-human interaction; students' experience in using Chatbots, teachers’ perspectives on chatbot and student performance in using Chatbots. A new framework has been developed using current research themes. A list of unanswered research questions has been identified.
