Summary Japanese translations of the Wilson-Patterson Attitude Scales were given to 100 male and 119 female university students and 56 schoolboys and 56 schoolgirls in Japan. The structure of social attitudes revealed by factor analysis in Western and other cultures was only partly replicated, with men coming closer to showing the previously found pattern than women. Gender differences in the endorsement of individual items were, however, almost identical to those found in European cultures, the males being more tough, exploratory, and hedonistic, females more compassionate, traditional, and religious.
