Base amplifiers such as the carbamate compounds 1 generate more bases than they consume. The base-catalyzed fragmentation reaction of 1 liberates the corresponding aliphatic amines which catalyze the decomposition of the carbamates (see scheme). This leads to autocatalytic, nonlinear fragmentation of 1, in a novel nonlinear organic reaction. The addition of the base amplifier to an epoxy polymer sensitized with a photobase generator results in the marked improvement of sensitivity.
