The task I have set myself is to discuss release, and interaction with drugs, of substances which might act as transmitters of impulses in the central nervous system (CNS). In effect, I shall restrict myself to the first transmitter ever discovered, acetylcholine, and the substances now known as cerebral monoamines-the catecholamines dopamine and noradrenaline, and the indole derivative 5-hydroxy- tryptamine. First, I shall very briefly discuss a few other candidates for impulse transmission and give the reasons why I shall only mention them in passing.
