ABSTRACT Long-term athletic development involves the lifelong pursuit of physical health and fitness and can be facilitated with a grassroots approach. Recent research has highlighted the benefits of athletic development programs, and guidelines for exercises, volume, intensity, and pedagogical considerations. However, there is less literature available describing the process of starting a program or highlighting important factors to consider. Therefore, the aim of this article was to provide insight into the logistical considerations needed to start a youth athletic development program within a community, key reflections and learnings from several examples, and practical applications to enhance the physical development of youth in a fun, safe environment.
