The complete history of transition to ignition in a supercritical, spatially inhomogeneous system is examined via activation-energy asymptotics. The sequence of events consists of a relatively quiescent induction period, followed by an extremely rapid development and growth of a localized zone of intense reaction. On reaching maturity, this zone (hot spot) transforms into a practically steady reaction wave traveling through the system.
