Schwab, who died on 13 April 1988. The Journal of Curriculum Studies has selected this paper for this purpose because we believe it shows clearly the continuing significance of Schwab's writing to all curriculum thought. The paper, a revision of one published in the Proceedings of the 1960 Invitational Conference on Testing (Princeton, NJ: Educational Testing Service), was originally entitled ‘Criteria for the evaluation of achievement tests: from the point of view of the subject matter specialist’. The present title was used in the version of the paper published in Joseph J. Schwab (1978) Science, Curriculum, and Liberal Education: Selected Essays (Chicago: University of Chicago Press). The text of the 1978 version (slightly revised) is used here. The paper is republished with the permission of the Educational Testing Service, copyright owner
