An approach to marriage counseling based on the principles of reciprocity and social exchange is described. Behavior modification techniques are utilized to implement this program designed to resolve marital conflict between spouses. Following an educational model throughout the program, spouses are encouraged to negotiate their own reciprocal-exchange contracts with decreasing dependency on the counseloreducator. A case study is presented to illustrate the functionality of the model.
