Improvised devices (IEDs) areamong the deadliest weapons coalition forcesface in Iraq, and defeating their use by insurgents isboth essential and extremely challenging. Thus far,U.S. defense science and technology communitieshave focused on developing technical solutions tothe IED threat. However, IEDs are a product ofhuman ingenuity and human social organization. Ifwe understand the social context in which they areinvented, built, and used we will have an additionalavenue for defeating them. A
