This paper considers certain situations where unbalanced data can be treated as surrogate balanced data in solving linear model problems. In these situations, computations may be simplified to a balanced analysis of variance; a simple restructuring of cell frequencies is applied to reduce the dimensions of an A.O.V. data set in handling reduced models. The techniques developed are also useful in determining rank.
