Key result
Adolescent obesity is linked to ~18% higher basal LV myocardial work vs. normal-weight controls.
Why the study?
Anorexia nervosa and obesity alter SBP and loading conditions that may affect left ventricular myocardial work, but their effects on global and regional myocardial work remained to be evaluated.
Does weight disorder (anorexia nervosa or obesity) alter global and regional myocardial work in female adolescents compared to normal-weight controls?
Observational (n=87)
No
Does weight disorder (anorexia nervosa or obesity) alter global and regional myocardial work in female adolescents compared to normal-weight controls?
Absolute Event Rate: 1854% vs 1575%
p-value: p=<0.001
While global myocardial work remains preserved in female adolescents with weight disorders, those with obesity exhibit altered regional myocardial work distribution with increased basal work, potentially indicating early regional remodeling.
May signal early regional remodeling in obese adolescents; supports further investigation into myocardial work in pediatric weight disorders.

Paysal et al. (2021) conducted an observational in Weight disorders (Anorexia nervosa and Obesity) (n=87). Obesity and Anorexia Nervosa vs. Normal weight controls was evaluated on Basal left ventricular myocardial work (mmHg%) (p=<0.001). While global myocardial work was similar across groups, adolescents with obesity had significantly higher basal myocardial work (1854 mmHg%) compared to normal-weight controls (1575 mmHg%).
